Leonardo R3 is a microcontroller development board built on the ATmega32U4 microcontroller. The most distinctive feature of this microcontroller is the built-in USB 2.0 communication. This allows for greater flexibility and easy configuration of the microcontroller board as a USB keyboard, joystick, and more. 20 input/output ports and 6 analog inputs are brought out on female header strips with a 2.54 mm pitch, as well as 5V, 3.3V and GND. An additional 6 analog inputs are available and overlap with digital ports, meaning analog pins A0-A6 can also be used as digital. 7 of the pins can be used for PWM (Pulse Width Modulation). The inputs for the ICSP programming connector are brought out on a male header strip. Indicator LEDs are available – ON (indicates the presence of 5V supply voltage), TX and RX (indicate transmit/receive signals for serial communication) and L (connected to GPIO 13 microcontroller pin). Near the MICRO-USB connector is the RESET button, used to restart the microcontroller board. It is connected to the RESET pin, which is also brought out on a female header strip.

Power for the Leonardo R3 is supplied via the USB connector or a DC connector 5.5x2.1mm. The voltage range for the DC connector is 7-12VDC.

Communication and programming of the Leonardo R3 are handled via the MICRO-USB-B connector. The serial communication signals RX and TX are brought out on GPIO 0 and GPIO 1.

The following additional signals are brought out on the female header strips:

  • AREF – sets an external reference voltage source for the analog-to-digital converter

  • IOREF – outputs the voltage corresponding to the microcontroller's operating voltage

  • SDA and SCL – for establishing an I2C interface

  • RESET – used to restart the microcontroller board.
